Build your opening in two minutes

Use the BRIDGE from Chapter 3. Pick a situation, change the example to yours, and copy an opening you can say out loud (or practice first).

Your opening

E: end with a next step. After you've listened, agree one small thing, and thank them for hearing you.

Four scripts, word for word

Copy one, fill the [brackets] with your details, and change the words until they sound like you.

The friend who's always late

I love our catch-ups, so I want to mention something small before it becomes a big thing. The last [three] times, you've arrived about [forty minutes] after we agreed. I end up waiting on my own and feeling a bit unimportant. Could you text me if you're running more than fifteen minutes late?

Then try: "Is something going on? I'd like to understand." Then listen.

Telling your manager you're overloaded

I want to keep doing good work for the team, and I'm worried I can't at the moment. Right now I'm working on [the launch, the budget review and two client accounts], and I've been [working until 8 most nights]. I'm worried the quality is starting to slip, and I'm running out of energy. Could we look at my priorities together, and decide what can wait or move to someone else?

Then try: "Which of these matters most to you right now?"

Asking a parent to get their driving checked

Dad, I love you, and I love that you're so independent. That's exactly why I want to talk about something. In the last month you've [clipped the curb twice] and [got lost coming back from the store]. I've been really worried, and I'd never forgive myself if something happened to you or someone else. Would you be willing to have a driving assessment, so we both know where things stand?

Then try: "How do you feel about your driving lately? Have you noticed anything?"

Apologizing properly

I want to apologize, properly, because you matter to me. On [Saturday], I [shouted at you in front of your friends]. That was wrong, and it was my fault. I can only imagine how embarrassing it was. Here's what I'll do differently: [if I'm upset, I'll wait and talk to you privately].

Then try: "Is there anything else I should understand about how it felt?"

These four are from the book. The other 36 cover in-laws, siblings, money, chores, phones, friends who cancel, credit at work, noise, boundaries, saying no and asking for help.

Good questions

Questions people ask

What is the BRIDGE method?

Six steps for almost any hard conversation: Begin with why you care, Report what happened (facts only), say the Impact on you, make one Desire or request, Give them the floor, and End with a next step.

What if the other person gets angry or defensive?

Chapter 5 is all about that: calm replies for defensiveness, counter-attacks, anger, tears, silence, minimizing and agreeing too quickly, plus how to pause and come back.

Which situations do the 40 scripts cover?

Family (aging parents, siblings, in-laws, adult children), partners (chores, money, feeling disconnected, phones), friends (lateness, cancelling, money owed, drifting apart), work (feedback, workload, raises, deadlines, credit), neighbors and complaints, plus apologies, boundaries, saying no and asking for help.

How does the AI rehearsal partner work?

You paste a prompt into an AI assistant like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot, and it plays the other person, including the tough reactions. Type "pause" and it coaches you. The book explains how to keep it private.
