Your Habit Recipe

Why Day 66? In a study at University College London, new daily habits took a median of 66 days to feel automatic. The book's 30 days are the launch; Part 4 takes you the rest of the way.

Six Habit Recipes you can start tonight

Each one has an anchor you already do, a tiny action and a celebration. Copy one, change it to fit your day, and start.

After I get into bed, I will read one page. Then I'll tick my tracker and say "Nice."

Then try: putting the book on your pillow every morning, so you can't miss it.

Move more

After I switch on the kettle, I will do five squats. Then I'll say "Strong!"

Then try: climbing one rung of the Habit Ladder after a week of easy days.

A calmer home

After I finish dinner, I will put away five things. Then I'll enjoy the clear counter.

Then try: pairing it with a song you love (temptation bundling).

A calmer mind

After I park the car at home, I will take three slow breaths. Then I'll smile before I go in.

Then try: rating how automatic it feels, from 1 to 5, every day.

Drink more water

After I sit down at my desk, I will drink a glass of water. Then I'll tick the box.

Then try: leaving a full glass by the kettle the night before.

Gratitude

After I turn off the TV, I will write one good thing from today. Then I'll close the book with a "done".

Then try: reading back through your notes on Day 30.

In the book, Chapter 7 shows you how to write your own recipe in six steps, with five quality checks so it works on your worst day.

Good questions

Questions people ask

Does it really take 30 days to form a habit?

Not quite, and the book is honest about it. In the best-known study (Lally and colleagues, 2010), new daily habits took a median of 66 days to become automatic, with a range of 18 to 254. The 30 days are the launch: the steepest part of the climb. Part 4 takes you to day 66.

Isn't it "21 days to form a habit"?

That's a myth. It comes from a 1960 book by a plastic surgeon who said patients needed a minimum of about 21 days to get used to a change. Chapter 3 tells the whole story.

What if I miss a day?

In the research, a single missed day made no real difference. The book gives you a simple rule (never miss twice), a minimum version for bad days and a Restart Ritual.

Can I build more than one habit?

Start with one. Once it's automatic, Chapter 11 shows you how to chain the next one onto it.

What exactly do I download?

Five files: the 74-page workbook (PDF), the Habit Tracker Pack (PDF), 24 Habit Cards (PDF), a printable surprise (PDF), and a free sample you can share.

Can I print it?

Yes. Everything prints on US Letter or A4. Print the printables as often as you like for your household.

Can I see some of it first?

Yes. Download the free sample (the welcome, two chapters and two daily pages), and try the habit planner on this page.

How do I get the files after paying?

Right after checkout you come back to your SkillNugget library, and we email you a sign-in link. Download the files there any time, on any device. No password needed.
